What is Lightning?

Iphone charger

Lightning has been the replacement power connector for the iPhone since 2012 and the advent of the iPhone 5. The 8 pin connector replaced the old school larger 30 pin connector and is now used with all later model iPhones, iPads and iPods.

Although it annoyed many at launch, due to customers having to replace all their old iphone cables and accessories, we've come to love it as it provides an easy interface for any time your phone needs to be charged or plugged in to your computer, TV or other peripheral.

Your iOS device now comes standard with a Lightning charger, allowing you to plug in to charge your device. Apart from the standard packaged charger, you can get fast chargers, travel chargers, car chargers, as well as lightning to USB which provides both a charging function as well as data transfer function to your PC or Mac. Pretty much everything you've ever been able to plug your iphone into will now have a Lightning adaptor.

Why did Apple Adopt This?

The USB-mini connector - what you see usually used with Android devices - can be very fiddly to insert. The Apple's new connector seeks to address this by an easy-to-use port. The micro-USB connectors also make it easier to drop the phone while charging, which makes leaves your phone more open to damage. The physical design of the Lightning makes it a far superior choice.
